13th U.S.-Brazil Innovation Learning Laboratory

November 18, 2011

The 13th U.S.-Brazil Innovation Learning Lab took place Friday November 18th  at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUC-RS) in Porto Alegre, Brazil in conjunction with our Brazilian partners ABDI (Agência Brasileira de Desenvolvimento Industrial) and MBC (Movimento Brasil Competitivo). This lab was the most recent of the Council’s progressive series that launched in 2008 – bi-national, multi-day, C-suite workshops aimed at catalyzing and scaling new-to-the world partnerships, and building on the innovation ecosystems and capacities inherent in the Western Hemisphere’s two largest economies.

The U.S. delegation led by Chad Evans, Senior Vice President; was comprised of a diverse group of leaders from both academia and industry. Several key Council members participated in the U.S. delegation including TLSI co-chairs: Dr. Ray Johnson, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation; and Dr. Klaus Hoehn, Vice President Advanced Technology and Engineering of Deere & Company. Other notable participants include several other Council members such as Dr. Spiros Dimolitsas, Senior Vice President for Research & Chief Technology Officer of Georgetown University; and Dr. Ravishankar Iyer, Vice Chancellor for Research of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; as well as key Brazilian leaders such as Mr. Nelson Fujimoto, Secretary for Innovation of the Braizlian Ministry for Development, Industry and Foreign Trade; and Dr. Jorge Ávila, President of the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property. The senior leaders that participated from both countries demonstrates the continuingly deepening of the long-standing partnership between the Western Hemisphere’s two largest economies.

The 13th U.S.-Brazil Innovation Learning Laboratory focused on ways in which both nations can accelerate knowledge and technology transfer, spur entrepreneurship, and catalyze the next generation of innovators. This Innovation Learning Laboratory was a “sister” Lab to one the Council recently co-hosted in Durham, North Carolina with Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering.

Attention focused on innovation challenges and opportunities neither country can meet alone—as well as cross-sector learning —particularly in: the nexus of strategic resources, like energy and water; scaling up the overall entrepreneurial environment for key, emerging sectors (IT and social media); and, meeting the health needs of rapidly urbanizing societies, while innovating at the frontiers of bioscience.
