The High Performance Computing Initiative (HPC) is intended to stimulate and facilitate wider usage of HPC across the private sector to propel productivity, innovation and competitiveness. The goals of the Initiative are to:
- Analyze the economic rationale for sustaining U.S. leadership in HPC, especially the impact upon manufacturing, services, business, and state-of-the-art research capabilities
- Identify key private sector HPC applications needs and priorities
- Identify workforce education and training needs to integrate HPC in the private sector
- Foster public-private sector partnerships to better leverage resources and expertise to help overcome barriers to more widespread private sector usage
The Council Initiative will leverage the insights and expertise of its members in a number of ways.
Industry Success Stories with High Performance Computing
These case studies showcase the competitive benefits that can be achieved from modeling and simulation with HPC. They discuss problems organizations faced and the solutions they reached using their own HPC resources or through partnership with National Science Foundation-funded university HPC centers across the country. In each instance, these organizations advanced their R&D, accelerated innovation, created important new knowledge and shortened time-to-market for new products—all essential to business success in the face of global competition. Each organization also indicated significant cost savings and revenue enhancement.
Industry Grand Challenge Case Studies
The Council has identified and reported on industry specific “grand challenges” that could make a significant contribution to national productivity and competitiveness if more computational capability could be made available to solve them. Reports address barriers to applying HPC tools to solving the challenges, the impact to company/industry bottom lines, and societal contributions (safety, energy efficiency) if these challenges can be solved.

Private Sector Survey and Interviews
The Council annually undertakes a top-level survey, followed by individual interviews, of private sector CTOs, CIOs, production and research managers in multiple sectors using high performance computing. Survey findings shed light on the factors that encourage or inhibit the use of HPC by the private sector to solve their current research and business challenges, and what future applications these users can foresee.
Industry Sector Workshops
Using the industry grand challenge reports and survey results as a framework, the Council is convening a series of workshops in various sectors to identify specific industry needs and trends related to the application of HPC. Following each workshop, a report will be prepared to capture the discussion with emphasis on the priorities, value proposition and constraints to HPC usage. Findings from the workshops will be disseminated broadly to the business and policy communities.
Annual HPCS Users Conference
The Council convenes an annual HPC Users conference to share the results and findings from the case studies, survey and interviews, to identify applications needs that cut across sectors and to assess the impact of HPC on industry productivity.
