Innovation in Our Backyard

The Washington Post today has a story about a new start-up here in DC. Envion has just opened a $5 milllion plant that will convert the plastic we get rid of into fuel. This is different than standard recycling, where plastic gets used in different ways. The Envion plant turns plastic into fuel that can be combined with other materials to become gasoline or diesel. Envion said its new generator can consume any type of plastic and convert it into synthetic oil; depending on the type of plastic, one ton can be converted into three to six barrels of fuel. Energy Spotlight: Hawaii

Hawaii is aiming to become a model for clean energy solutions. Because it's so far away from any other state in the union, it can get very expensive for Hawaii to use traditional energy sources that have to be shipped in. Harnessing sustainable energy from the environment around them won't just help the state keep its beautiful natural resources -- it'll save the state money. Last week, I wrote about how a former Sierra Club president is now working to help companies such as Walmart become more sustainable. They just announced another initiative they’re using to help the next generation make sustainability a priority.The 2010 Walmart Better Living Business Plan Challenge asks students to showcase their ideas about sustainable energy solutions. The Environmental Protection Agency has named seventeen companies, including several National Energy Summit participants and Council on Competitiveness members, as "Green Power Partners."Deutsche Bank and Intel Corporation, whose President and CEO, Paul Otellini, is a Council on Competitiveness member, were named Green Power Partners of the Year.
