Intel CEO and CalTech President: Now is Time to Embrace Innovation

Council Members Otellini, Chameau Call for Investments in Science and Technology

Last week, the Huffington Post featured an op-ed by Council on Competitiveness members Paul Otellini, CEO of Intel Corporation, and Jean-Lou Chameau, President of the California Institute of Technology, calling for a greater focus on innovation.

"With this economic near-death experience still so fresh, now may not seem the time for ambitious and aggressive investments in science and technology," write Otellini and Chameau. "But, in reality, this is the best possible time to embrace innovation."

Otellini's belief in heavy science and technology investment has been reflected through his leadership at Intel. Earlier this year, the company announced plans for a new alliance to invest $3.5 billion in fledgling U.S. technology companies over the next two years.

Meanwhile, Chameau has instilled a culture at CalTech that promotes game-changing research and highlights opportunities for students to realize the business potential of their work.

The stewardship of Otellini and Chameau is invaluable for a country the needs a national innovation strategy to remain competitive in a global marketplace.
