Labor Vice Chairman Bill Hite Receives Award from Military Officers Association of America
April 28, 2011
The Council is pleased to announce that Labor Vice Chairman William P. Hite received a Distinguished Service Award last week from the Military Officers Association of America for his work in supporting military-related initiatives. He was recognized for his efforts in running the Veterans In Piping program, which trains veterans in welding and places them in local union apprentice programs upon completion of the program. He is also on the Board of Directors of Helmets to Hardhats, an organization that helps active duty military personnel find careers in construction.
“We are thrilled that Bill is receiving well-deserved recognition for his dedication and service to America's veterans,” said Council President and CEO Deborah Wince-Smith. “His leadership is an incredible asset in providing training and opportunities for the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country.”
Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA) praised him on the floor of the House of Representatives for running a program that “is considered by many to be the most successful military transition program in the country.” The program offers free training for veterans while providing an established network that will ensure easy access to a job once they graduate from the program.
“He has been called upon by the leaders of both our political parties in recognition of his fidelity, objectivity, and candor. These characteristics have made him among the most respected labor leaders in the United States,” said Congressman Filner.
"Like the military, our union is also a brotherhood. We learn together, work together, and interact together every day," Hite said of the award. "The men and women who join our ranks after their service are part of the future of our industry."
