Washington Post Op-Ed on Supercomputing Race Cites Council’s Work
National Lab Leaders Agree: To Out-Compete is to Out-Compute
June 27, 2011
Bruce Goodwin of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Thomas Zacharia of Oak Ridge National Laboratory published an op-ed in the Washington Post last Friday warning that America's leadership in supercomputing is facing unprecedented threats. Citing two Council on Competitiveness white papers, they also make a clear connection between high performance computing and economic growth:
What does leadership in high- performance computing mean? The U.S. Council on Competitiveness has said that “to out-compete is to out-compute.” In its 2008 report “The New Secret Weapon,” the council concluded, “Supercomputing is part of the corporate arsenal to beat rivals by staying one step ahead on the innovation curve. It provides the power to design products and analyze data in ways once unimaginable.”
The op-ed was published on the same day that President Obama visited Carnegie Mellon University to announce an Advanced Manufacturing Partnership that will leverage America's technology leadership to boost the U.S. manufacturing sector.
