Passage of the America COMPETES Act Essential to U.S. Competitiveness

Council on Competitiveness President Deborah L. Wince-Smith regarding House consideration of The America COMPETES Act

August 02, 2007

WASHINGTON—Council on Competitiveness president Deborah L. Wince-Smith made the following statement regarding the bipartisan conference report on the America COMPETES Act, expected to be considered by the U.S. House of Representatives today.

“Today Congress is poised to take action on legislation called for by the Council on Competitiveness in its landmark report, Innovate America, in 2004. The United States remains the global economic leader, but our position is not guaranteed. The America COMPETES Act embraces innovation as the lynchpin for future U.S. competitiveness and individual prosperity. For that reason, the America COMPETES Act has garnered strong bipartisan support in both houses of Congress and the Administration, as well as a broad coalition of private-sector organizations. The reality of the global competitiveness race requires the passage of the America COMPETES Act now.”
