Council on Competitiveness Applauds National Research Council Report on Research Universities

June 18, 2012

Washington, DC – The Council on Competiveness congratulates the National Research Council (NRC) for its report, Research Universities and the Future of America. The report responds to a provision of the America COMPETES Act asking for the top ten actions that government, universities, and others can do to help the United States compete and prosper.

“The report puts forward sound ideas that would advance the United States economically and serve its citizens,” said Deborah L. Wince-Smith, President and CEO of the Council on Competitiveness. “The recommendations would improve partnerships between universities, government and industry. The report also suggests important ways to strengthen the productivity and efficiency of research universities, and to confer the skills and knowledge Americans need to compete and prosper.”

“I also would like to acknowledge the leadership of Chad Holliday who chaired the NRC Committee on Research Universities,” said Wince-Smith.  Holliday, Chairman of the Board of Bank of America, is the Chairman Emeritus of the Council on Competitiveness.

The issues addressed in the NRC report lie at the heart of U.S. competitiveness. The role of research universities in technology innovation, talent development, and regional economic growth have long been a focus of the Council on Competitiveness – including a new initiative under development on the future of the higher education enterprise in the United States.
