Energy Initiative Co-Chair, VP on XM Radio: Presidential Candidates Must Make Energy Security a U.S.

February 27, 2008

Today, Michael Langford, co-chair of the Energy Security, Innovation & Sustainability (ESIS) Initiative and national president of the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA), AFL-CIO; and Susan Rochford, Council on Competitiveness vice president for Energy & Sustainability Initiatives, were guests on XM Radio's P.O.T.U.S. 2008 (President of the United States) to discuss the importance of energy security as a critical driver of U.S. competitiveness.

Today's interview came as a result of an open letter issued to presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Mike Huckabee, John McCain, Barack Obama and Ron Paul, by ESIS Initiative co-chairs, Langford, Jim Owens of Caterpillar and Shirley Ann Jackson of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Council President Deborah Wince-Smith. The letter asks three initial questions to stimulate discussion on how each candidate would deal with critical competitiveness issues discussed in a recent dialogue among leaders from business, labor and academia. Both the letter and a Council report on the results of the dialogue, Define. The Energy-Competitiveness Relationship, were released February 26, 2008.
