Wince-Smith briefs Hill on advanced manufacturing communities

DWS Briefing 7 14 16WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Days before national political conventions will be touting jobs, jobs and more jobs, U.S. Council on Competitiveness President & CEO Deborah L. Wince-Smith briefed Congressional staff and policy makers on opportunities emerging from advanced manufacturing and the future of American jobs.

"Manufacturing jobs are not as dirty, dumb dangerous and disappearing as they used to be," said Wince-Smith, citing the advanced manufacturing renaissance as a "back to the future" story akin to the original industrial revolution. "Jobs in technology-intensive manufcturing require skilled workers who earn almost double what they would earn in traditional manufacturing. Several of the Council's reports have shown these high-tech industries make the country much more competitive overall, especially as overseas wages continue to rise."

National CTO Group holds 14th Dialogue

TLSI WorkinggroupMembers of the Technology Leadership & Strategy Initiative (TLSI) – the U.S. Council on Competitiveness' group of Chief Technology Officers and research leadership from industry, universities and national laboratories – convened for their 14th Dialogue, led by chairs Dr. John Tracy, Chief Technology Officer, The Boeing Company, and Dr. Klaus Hoehn, Vice President, Advanced Technology and Engineering, Deere & Company. In addition, the Council was honored to announce Dr. Keoki Jackson, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Lockheed Martin, has joined the TLSI and will serve as its third chair. Jackson brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience to the TLSI and builds on the history of Lockheed Martin’s leadership and support of the TLSI.

Council, Whirlpool Lead ‘Circular Economy’ Dialogue

Whirlpool’s Maureen Sertich and the U.S. Council on Competitiveness’ Katie Sarro teamed up to moderate a session at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation on the “circular economy.”  The circular economy discussion explained how companies like Whirlpool are seeking ways to retain more of the value of the material, energy and labor that go into manufacturing appliances.  The aim is to eliminate all waste by refurbishing old products and recycling others.

“Whirlpool is one of our Council members taking the lead in designing new products that change the way we handle 'waste' and move  toward a greener, circular economy,” said Sarro, Senior Policy Director of Energy & Manufacturing Initiatives at the Council.

U.S. Council on Competitiveness expands ties to Malaysia, Signs MOU
