Research in Clean Energy Manufacturing Key to Future U.S. Prosperity

NEW YORK – With American manufacturing on the cusp of regaining powerhouse status, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) unveiled a new regional program offering small- and medium-sized businesses access to the government’s top research labs.  The Manufacturing Impacts Through Energy and Commerce (MITEC) Pilot Program opens the doors to resources previously unavailable for businesses and universities.

The announcement came at the 4th American Energy and Manufacturing Competitiveness (AEMC) Summit, a program formed by the U.S. Council on Competitiveness.  It builds on a multi-year arc of significant, new investments and programs announced by the DOE and its Clean Energy Manufacturing Initiative (CEMI) to rebuild national shared infrastructure in support of manufacturing excellence.

Crawford, Koonin Join Council as Fellows

Koonincrawford CocWASHINGTON, D.C. - The US Council on Competitiveness announced the addition of Ms. Dona Crawford as a Senior Fellow. Crawford is a former co-chair of the Council's High Performance Computing Advisory Committee (HPCAC) and recently retired as the Associate Director for Computation at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The Council has also named the Hon. Steven Koonin, a current HPCAC co-chair, as Distinguished Fellow. Dr. Koonin is Director of the Center for Urban Science and Progress at the Stern School of Business at New York University.

Their distinguished careers have maintained US leadership in supercomputing and served to leverage that leadership for economic competitiveness and innovation.  They were driving forces behind new programs and policies that encourage greater and more effective partnerships between industry and the national laboratories.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - For Brazilian industry leaders, the importance of forging ties with the United States is plastered all over international news coverage. Back home, their country is grinding through impeachment proceedings with television cameras capturing the whole saga.

Many of those industry leaders traveled to Washington, D.C., this week to take part in the US Council on Competitiveness’ new effort to connect leaders and catalyze innovation. The effort builds on more than a decade of path-breaking efforts in the U.S. and Brazil to raise the competitiveness of both countries.

Al Franken (D-MN) described the testimony at the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources hearing today.  The hearing topic: “The Status of Innovation Technologies in Advanced Manufacturing.”  
The Hon. Deborah L. Wince-Smith, US Council on Competitiveness president and CEO, was singled out by Sen. Franken.

"Sometimes in this job we get a little pessimistic when we see things," he said. "This is unbelievable what you guys are doing. This makes me an optimist. Ms. Wince-Smith is talking about the future and the amazing things we're doing in advanced manufacturing."

Council Hosts Experts to Address Advanced Materials Issues in Washington, D.C.

Second sector study under Energy and Manufacturing Competitiveness Partnership (EMCP) gathers experts to the Council’s office in Washington, D.C.

Cropped DSC 0490WASHINGTON, D.C. – While messages about innovation reverberated on Capitol Hill, leading experts, including Dr. William H. Goldstein, Director, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Dr. Mark Johnson, Director, Advanced Manufacturing Office, U.S. Department of Energy; Dr. Rustom K. Mody, Vice President and Chief Engineer, Baker Hughes; and Mr. Adam Khan, Founder and CEO, AKHAN Semiconductor convened across town to identify challenges and opportunities regarding the design, production and scaling of advanced materials.

The US Council on Competitiveness, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and QuesTek Innovations LLC, led the gathering to forumlate policy recommendations for a future Council report and strategic agenda to be delivered to the next presidential administration. Leaders from national laboratories, universities and industry CEOs discussed four cross-cutting pillars to frame a productive and invigorating discussion: talent, technology, investment and infrastructure.
